CHRISTINE'S CHRONICLES: Affordable Housing in Ontario

By Christine Elliott, MPP
Newmarket-Aurora

Since my last column, I have met with St. John's Ambulance of York Region, Community & Home Assistance to Seniors (CHATS) and Alzheimer Society of York Region, Abuse Hurts, the Ontario Association of Children's Aid Societies, Yellow Brick House, the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada. I was also pleased to participate in a roundtable hosted by LOFT Community Services to learn more about the great, collaborative work already taking place to support patients, families and caregivers in Newmarket transitioning from one health care provider to another.

I hear from constituents that rent prices right here in Newmarket-Aurora are unaffordable. We need to start building more housing and providing the right kind of housing options for the people of Ontario.

That's why our government is taking steps to increase the supply of housing that is affordable. That means building more housing, faster, to lower housing costs. We also need to build the right type of housing in the right places to give people more choice.

We are developing a Housing Supply Action Plan and launched a public consultation to hear ideas about how to build more affordable and good quality housing. The Housing Supply Action Plan will include measures that the Province can take to increase the supply of new ownership and rental housing in Ontario.

Our government is taking steps to increase the supply of housing that is affordable. We are going to remove barriers and red tape that is limiting the supply of housing and driving up costs.
