Culture Days at the Cultural Centre

By Jane Taylor

The Aurora Cultural Centre celebrates Culture Days 2013 with an invitation to drop by on Saturday, September 28 from 1 – 4 p.m. for free activities throughout the afternoon.

Aspiring filmmakers – ages 12 to adult – are invited to participate in a free Multimedia Film Festival of York Region skill-building workshop.

Join professional filmmakers John Watson and Rob Comeau in an introductory afternoon workshop where you will create your own video that will be edited following the event. Once edited, your video will be ready – should you wish – to submit to the 2014 Multimedia Film Festival of York Region.

Watson, a graduate of the Canadian Film Centre, is director/producer creating digital content for such global partners as MTV Japan. Rob Comeau got his start in filmmaking in high school, and has since gone on to produce and screen short films, and is currently working on a debut feature-length movie.

No previous experience or equipment is required to participate in the workshop – just a keen interest. Please call the Centre to register ahead of time as spaces are limited for this free workshop; register in advance at 905-713-1818. The filmmaking workshop runs from 1 – 4 p.m.

Upstairs in the Great Hall Gallery, exhibiting artists Michelle van Nie and Robin Burnett of the current exhibition A Sense of Place invite the public to experience their creative process by contributing to a community art piece.

Van Nie has prepared an encaustic piece, and invites all guests this afternoon to inscribe their personal connection to the Canadian landscape onto this collaboratively-created encaustic and mixed media painting. All ages are encouraged to participate, and all materials are provided in this activity.

On the main floor, Red & Blue gallery exhibiting artists Greg Locke and Miiko will be on hand to launch their current exhibition Abstractions with an opportunity to speak directly with the artists about their unique art forms. Miiko's large-format acrylics and Locke's unique fused glass and stained glass pieces provide an inspiring backdrop and offer a unique gallery experience.

Complimentary refreshments will be offered to all. We look forward to welcoming you through our doors in this free celebration of Culture Days!
