Ken Thurston, Director of the York Region Board of Education, will retire this summer.

Mr. Thurston, who has been Director of the Board (YRDSB) for four years, announced his impending retirement on Tuesday evening, effective July 31.
In a statement released Wednesday, Thurston said he was “proud” of his tenure.

“I am proud of the achievements that I have had the good fortune to be involved in over the past four years,” he said. “The Board’s students, staff, parents and community partners have always demonstrated passion, commitment and innovative thinking, which I know will continue to benefit York Region and public education as a whole.”

After more than 30 years in the education sector, Mr. Thurston was appointed director of the YRDSB on January 1, 2010, leading the third largest school district in Ontario with over 121,000 students across nine municipalities.

“Ken Thurston’s leadership has been instrumental to our Board’s many successes, said Board Chair Anna DeBartolo. “As Director of Education, Ken has implemented a strategic vision focused on delivering high-quality, inclusive education. We’re proud of the work he has done and wish him well in his forthcoming retirement.”
