SENIOR SCAPE

By Jim Abram

Anne's Bake Sale
Calling all bakers! Our 2015 Holiday Bazaar will be held on this Saturday, November 7, featuring our ever popular “Anne's Bake Table” for which we need a donation of your home baked goodies – cookies, squares, cakes, loaves, tarts, pies, etc.
A sign-up sheet is available at the reception desk of your Aurora Seniors' Centre!

Queen's Park visit
A couple of weeks ago, Aurora Seniors' Centre board members Jim Abram, Jan Freedman, Frank Leone and Louise Miller had the pleasure of attending at the Queen's Park Legislature as guests of our Member of Provincial Parliament Chris Ballard.
Mr. Ballard publicly recognized the significant 10th anniversary of our Aurora Seniors' Centre! We were delighted to be introduced to Mario Sergio, the Minister responsible for Seniors Affairs who was most courteous. Many thanks to Scott Parry, Legislative Assistant to Chris Ballard, for making our visit to Queen's Park so memorable.

Remembrance Day
Be certain to honour our veterans and soldiers currently serving our great country by honouring their past and present service on Remembrance Day, November 11.
I will be at the Cenotaph in south Aurora on that date and hope many seniors join me in Remembrance. On Remembrance Day, members of the armed forces (soldiers, sailors and airmen) are commemorated.
The other common name for this day is Armistice Day which marks the date and time when armies stopped fighting World War I. on November 11th at 11am in 1918 (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month).
Some 100,000 Canadian soldiers died in the First and Second World Wars. It is just too bad that fighting on this little planet continues.

Congratulations to Richard Howard!
Congratulations are in order for Richard Howard for receiving a much well deserved Magna International Volunteer award on October 18, 2015 held at East Side Mario's, here in town. The guest speaker, Lindsay O'Conner, host of the International Sports Report on the Fan590 Sports Radio was incredibly engaging and informative. Richard earned this award for his tireless participation in volunteering to promote healthy participation of seniors in playing pickle ball in Aurora. Well done Richard!

Jan's Jams are winners!
Jan Freedman, one of the more active members of the Aurora Seniors' Association, member of the ASA Board of Directors and on the Special Events Committee and all-round great cook, recently competed at the Markham Fair in the Homecraft Division.
You may know Jan best for her excellent jams and preserves from her booth at the Aurora Farmers' Market and Artisan Fair held on Saturdays at the Town Park.
Jan was awarded with a total of nine ribbons as follows: 1st Place: Chutney; 2nd Place: Cranberry Sauce and also Chocolate Zucchini Loaf; 3rd Place: Preserved Pears, Pickled Beets and Chili Sauce; 4th Place: Banana Loaf, Grape Jelly, Preserved Peaches. Jan is now getting geared up for the competition at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Congratulations Jan.

Jimmy's last word: Drive safe and be careful out there.
