Tigers continue winning streak, taking down Stouffville, St. Michael’s

By Jeff Doner

Things are going swell for the Junior A Aurora Tigers. The club has won seven straight and have lost only three of their last 20 games.

The team improved on its division-leading record by handily defeating the Stouffville Spirit on and the St. Michaels Buzzers at home last weekend. They currently sit first in the north division with 61 points, which is 22 points ahead of the second place Pickering Panthers.

“We're playing really good hockey right now. We're playing good defensively, our goalies are playing well and we're able to put the puck in the net, so things are flowing really well,” said captain Robert Angiolella, who returned to action from an injury on Friday night.

The scoring forward sure didn't look as though he missed an extended period of time, as he led the team with two goals and two assists against Stouffville on Friday evening.

“I feel good, I've just got to get my legs moving early and I knew I was going to get tired throughout the game, but I just tried to keep moving and tried to stay tough out there,” he said postgame.

In fact, it was Angiolella who got the Tigers going early on Friday night. He scored the game's first goal just over two minutes in on the power play.
He added his second goal on the power play at the end of the second period to put the Tigers up 5 – 1 heading into the third.

Also scoring for the Tigers was defenceman Eric Williams with two goals, Taylor McCloy, Michael Laidley and Dylan Sikura en route to a 7 – 1 win.
Angiolella also looked comfortable skating with his old linemate McCloy on Friday night.

“He's a great player,” Angiolella said in assessment. “He has a lot of speed, he battles in the corners, he can score and pass the puck, so it's great to play with him. Obviously we clicked well tonight and hopefully we can keep it up.”

McCloy has racked up 20 goals and 50 points this season to help pace the Tigers offence on a nightly basis.
On Saturday night, the Tigers hosted St. Michaels and again did not disappoint the home crowd.

Defenseman Kyle Liu made a statement early by scoring for the Tigers and before the first period was over, Tyler Boston made 2 – 0. Drake Board drew assists on both goals.

St. Michaels led off the second period with a goal, but it was all Tigers from there on as Kennedy and Angiolella each scored to finish off a 4 – 1 win.

On Friday night, defenceman Callum Fryer said his team has gelled together nicely in time for the playoffs.

“We're playing a really good game right now and everyone is just connecting and it's going really well for us,” he said. “Honestly, it feels great. I've never played on a team like this before that pulls in 7 – 1 wins like we did tonight, but that has helped boost up the confidence.”
He also gave kudos to his returning captain.

“He's been one of the best captains I've had throughout my hockey career. Every game he just puts everything out there. He's just a great captain,” he said.

This week the Tigers will make a trip to play against the Buffalo Jr. Sabres and then will return home to face Georgetown and Milton on Friday and Saturday night.
