The sprawling, 7,300-yard championship course at Magna Golf Club plays host this week to the Toronto Star Amateur, one of the largest amateur golf tournaments in the country.

Rick MacArthur, the ruling medal play champion at Magna, teed off on Tuesday along with 120 golfers from across Ontario vying for ranking points on the world amateur stage.

The tournament marks the first time the Aurora golf course has hosted a multi-day amateur golf tournament, but the course does not go without its accolades. Awarded Canada’s Best New Golf Course in 2001, among the world golfing elites that have teed up at Magna are Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, and Mike Weir.

The 270 member course is located just west of Highway 404.

Six competitors in the tournament call Magna Golf Club their home course, namely MacArthur, Dave McVicker, Jeremy Freedman, Peter Giacomelli, Ed Moss, and George Nenos.

Orangeville’s Stephanie Tucker took the women’s championship in Oakville late last month.
